Recruiting runs on knowing who exists, where, and in what specialty. The federal registry answers all three for every provider in the country.
New entrants to a market
Clinicians who registered an NPI in the last ninety days in a given metro are the closest thing to a public list of people who have just arrived or just qualified. Both are worth a conversation.
Multi-state licence holders
The registry records a licence number and state against each taxonomy a provider files. Those holding several are disproportionately mobile, and disproportionately interested in locum work.
Density and competition
Before opening a search, it helps to know how many of a specialty already practise within fifty miles. That number is one query here.
What this data will not tell you
The registry says nothing about employment, availability or whether someone is practising at all — there is no retirement field, so records persist after people stop. It tells you who is registered, which is the start of a search rather than the end of one.
